Pubs and Restaurants
There are three pubs in Hartland village:
The Hart Inn - 01237 441474 (Landlords Paul and Michelle)
The Anchor Inn 01237 441414 (Landlady Anne and Fif)
The Kings Arms 01237 440151 (Landlords Sam and Kirsty)
The Kings is a good place to watch sport and is very young family oriented with a lovely garden for the summer. They do great pizzas and burgers (takeaway or eat-in).
Each pub has a different vibe and friendly staff.
The Hart is a little more upmarket while the Anchor is very traditional. They all do food and all have live music and quiz nights - check out their Facebook pages or websites.
Also in the Village is The Royal British Legion which is open to members and ex serviceman (and also local members will sign you in if you smile and buy them a pint!).
Coffee Shop On The Square, Hartland Village: serves light lunches, teas, coffees and homemade cakes. Opening hours are seasonal.
There is an excellent restaurant called Pattard Restaurant on the road from the Windbury Barn into Hartland. Although it is relatively expensive, the food and service is excellent and award winning. The menu is seasonal, local produce and continually changing. Booking is highly recommended. (Closed on Mondays)
The address is Pattard Restaurant, Pattard Farm, Hartland, EX39 6BY - 01237 441444

Outside the village (around 3 miles away from Windbury) at Hartland Quay you will find The Wrecker's Retreat pub at the Hartland Quay Hotel (01237 441218 Landlords Donal and Sarah). Especially good for watching the sun set and plenty of outdoor seating. We recommend the fish and chips and they also serve Sunday lunch. This is Richard’s local and has one of the best views in the world (in his opinion!!).
Outside the village there is the Hoops Inn (01237 451222) Beautiful historic thatched Coaching Inn on the A39 road towards Bideford, just before Horns Cross this does great food and drink, and good for Sunday lunch long into the afternoon.
In Woolsery (Woolfardisworthy) is the recently restored and gorgeous Farmers Arms (01237 439328) (which also offers fine dining).
Fish and chip shop (01237 431431) next door to the Farmers Arms is also excellent and, we feel, worth the drive (orders taken over phone & online – do check opening times)
Merry Harriers Garden Centre & Restaurant: just off the A39 close to Bucks Cross
(01237 4316110) The dining room serves, lunches, cream teas, a mid week roast and a Sunday Carvery with a choice of seven vegetables.
The restaurant overlooks a small lake and is home to The Gnome Reserve (open Easter to October) a MUST for the toddlers.
The Hoops Inn: On A39 Between Bideford and Hartland. 01237 451222
A picturesque 13th century former Coaching Inn, part thatched, Grade 11 listed building.
Fresh locally sourced and seasonal produce. Good for Sunday Roast too.
The Thatched Inn, Abbotsham: 01237 471321 Nr Bideford Lovely pub with beer garden and good quality food.
The Royal George Hotel, Appledore (01237 424138). A re-invigorated old pub, perched on the edge of the estuary, with great floor to ceiling views, you will have to park in the main car park and walk down the very narrow Irsha Street to reach the Hotel (just past the Beaver Inn). The food was excellent and the service excellent. We shall return here as soon as we can.
Other places to eat in Appledore:
Coffee Cabin (excellent lunches, snacks and cakes), John’s Deli with café, Flame Factory (Pizza’s & Grill), The Yard (Thai, healthy, fusion) The Beaver Inn (British gastro pub), The Seagate Hotel (I would check reviews).
Fresh Fish Shop from The Devon & Cornwall Fish Company , Fish Dock, Bubbastone Road, Appledore EX39 1LZ. Buy freshly landed fish/catch of the day. Open from 08.30 a.m. to 2.00 p.m. (or until they sell out) 07871 616515 https://www.facebook.com/devonandcornwallfish/
Further afield in Instow, The Boathouse (01271 860608) is a lovely restaurant. They have two areas, one you just walk in, a bit hit and miss in the summer time and very busy, and also the restaurant area which has glorious views of the sun setting over the estuary and hills, very romantic and makes a lovely evening with a superb menu too. You may need to book a month in advance to secure a table in the summer months.
Commodore Hotel, Instow: (01271 86034) booking required
Arguably the best view in Instow from the Strandfield Grill with the bonus of private parking.
Lounge service light bites and sandwiches 12.00 – 2.00 p.m., Sunday Lunches 12.00 – 1.45 p.m. and Dinner, fine dining Monday to Saturday from 6.30 p.m. to 8.30 p.m.
Other places to eat in Instow: Wayfarer Inn, Quay Inn, Johns Deli (café)
In the other direction, heading southwards on A39 towards Bude, Cornwall:
You may also like to try The Old Smithy Inn at Welcombe (about a 25 minute drive). Good sized beer garden with good food. The quiz night is fun and they have music or something most evenings (01288 331305) to book or for directions.
The Bush inn at Morwenstow, off A39 to Bude (01288 331242) is also cool place to go too.
The New Inn in Kilkhampton (on A39) which is another of our favourites, with great food and good for Sunday lunches. Next door to The Co-Op.
In Bude/Stratton there are a number of Bars/Restaurants; Indian, Thai and pubs.
Life’s a Beach, Seafood Restaurant; situated on Summerleaze Beach, Bude, with great sea views, relaxed dining with outdoor decking for Breakfast & Lunch. Dinner; booking a must. (01288 355222)
Just outside Bude, a favourite of ours, is the 13th century Tree Inn at Stratton (01288 352 038) and home of the “last of the Cornish Giants” Anthony Payne.
